Trend Micro is The Leader in Antispam

Spam has become increasingly malicious and companies need better overall antispam to protect their business. In independent antispam tests, Trend Micro had the highest spam catch rate.

In a comparative test of ten antispam products, both of the Trend Micro solutions tested received the
highest antispam catch rates.

Trend Micro InterScan™ Messaging Hosted Security had the highest catch rate at 96.71 percent, followed closely by Trend Micro InterScan™ Messaging Security Suite at 96.48 percent.

The test applied out-of-box configurations for all products so the results would mimic what a customer experiences when they first install the product.

No antispam training was conducted on any of the products tested.

Although both Trend Micro products use the same antispam technologies, Trend Micro
provides continual updates and tuning for its hosted service, explaining the better catch rate upon deployment.

Both solutions are part of Trend Micro™ Enterprise Security, designed to provide immediate protection with less complexity and close the vulnerability window before damage is done.

Given the dramatic rate of spam increase in the last few years, customers need this type of proactive security they can manage across their organizations.

The test, which was conducted by West Coast Labs over a six day period, included appliances by Barracuda, Fortinet, Ironport and McAfee; software programs by Microsoft, Sophos, Symantec, Trend Micro and Websense; and a SaaS offering by Trend Micro.

The products with the lowest detection rates were McAfee and Fortinet, with catch rates at less than 80 percent.

The false positive rates were minimal across all solutions, except Microsoft, which recorded a significant false positive rate of 0.71 percent.

Richard Thomas, senior test engineer, West Coast Labs concluded that, “Overall, both of the solutions provided by Trend Micro for this test demonstrated better protection rates for end users using this live test set against the other solutions tested.”

Spam Volume Will Continue to Grow

According to TrendLabs(SM), 115 billion spammed messages are being sent everyday.

Ninety-nine percent of spam comes from compromised computers, including those with malicious communication to and from remote users.

Spam is all about numbers as the more spam sent, the greater the chance users will click.

Spam will not go away but it will increasingly employ social engineering techniques to improve its conversion rates.

As one of the primary vehicles for spreading blended Web threats, spam has consistently risen over the years and the U.S. continues to be the “most spammed” country, receiving 22.5 percent of all spam, while Europe is the most spammed continent.

While malicious spam attachments have been infecting users for years, 2008 saw a huge increase in spam that employed social engineering techniques as cybercriminals find new and corruptive ways in targeting victims for profit.

Stopping malicious spam is critical in maintaining corporate network security and protecting essential business data.

Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite provides comprehensive spam, phishing, malware and virus protection, as well as flexible policy-based content filtering, and easy-to-use management tools to help monitor and control SMTP and POP3 traffic at the messaging gateway.

It helps safeguard against the loss of intellectual property and confidential information, integrated with Trend Micro™ Email Encryption Gateway.

In addition, InterScan Messaging Security minimizes server congestion, and helps maintain employee productivity. InterScan Messaging Security leverages Trend Micro Control Manager™, a platform-independent management tool, for centralized updating, consolidated reporting, and remote configuration capabilities.

Trend Micro’s hosted email security solution , InterScan Messaging Hosted Security stops spam, viruses, spyware, phishing and other email threats before they reach the corporate network, helping customers reclaim IT staff time, end-user productivity, bandwidth and mail server storage.

As a hosted solution, it requires no hardware or software to install and maintain, and Trend Micro’s worldwide team of experts manages all hot fixes, patches, updates and application tuning to continuously optimize security and performance.

Third Parties Demonstrate the Value of Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network

Trend Micro, in a separate test conducted by another lab, also exceeded competitors McAfee, IronPort, Websense, Blue Coat, SurfControl in blocking malicious URLs that are associated with Web threats.

Utilizing Trend Micro’s Web reputation technology, which is part of the Trend Micro Smart Protection
Network, provided up to 11 percent better protection than the next competitor.

In addition, a recent report found that Trend Micro Smart Protection Network helped reduce malware-related customer support calls by up to 75 percent.

A cloud-client security architecture designed to stop Web threats, Trend Micro Smart Protection Network provides instant, real-time protection, and a smarter way to combat Web threats compared to traditional methods of protection.

West Coast Labs Test Methodology

West Coast Labs used their live corporate enterprise spam feed, multiplexed across each of the products, so that each solution received the same emails.

Testing was conducted over a total of six days with subsequent analysis.

A look at the scourge of spam in 2008 and some predictions for spam in 2009.

Spam, oh spam — can we ever get rid of you?

2008 saw a promising blow to the endless sea of junk mail, but the relief didn’t last for long.

Now, spam experts say new forms of annoyances are on the way for the new year.

“Some battles have been won in 2008, but the war is far from over,” says Martin Thorborg, co-founder of SPAMfighter, a software development and spam research company.

So far, junk mail has managed to infiltrate only about 22 percent of its potential Internet territory, Thorborg says. That means more methods — and, yes, more headaches — are bound to be on the horizon.

The Spam Forecast

They may not have a doppler radar, but the SPAMfighter team has a full forecast — and it doesn’t look pretty. Here’s what’s topping the junk mail outlook for 2009:

More social network spam. Spammers started bringing their ways to networks in increasing numbers throughout ‘08, and that trend is expected to climb quickly in the coming months.

More complex networks behind the efforts. The shutdown of a Colorado hosting company in November had a significant effect because of its configuration: That single company served as the control center for the majority of botnets that were propagating unwanted messages.

Researchers think as much as 75 percent of all junk mail was tied to that one place. Spammers will be smarter in 2009, SPAMfighter says, building more resilient and less centralized systems.

More combined methods.

Spam will be partnered with spyware and phishing tactics to create new kinds of “blended threats,” SPAMfighter says.

An increase in “spear phishing,” or spam campaigns targeted to specific groups and interests.

These might include messages tailored to employees of a particular company or organization, or even just to members of certain online networks.

The messages are designed to look like official communications.

A general rise in creativity. In 2008, SPAMfighter observed things like phishing attempts disguised as warnings against phishing.

As even novice Internet users become more savvy, the disguises are likely to expand.

The Spam Equation

Many of the anti-spam precautions seem obvious — but, obviously, everyone isn’t taking them.

The good news?

The number of people still gullible is small.

A recent University of California study (PDF) suggests only one in every 12.5 million spam messages gets a response.

The bad news?

That tiny percentage is enough to generate $7,000 a day, or $3.5 million a year, for a decent-sized spam network, the study says.

What’s more, the activity could add as many as 8,500 new bots into the spam network every 24 hours.

While we’d love to track down those imbeciles actually ordering stuff from spam — if you’re one of them, please leave a comment below with your contact information — the more realistic action is just to spend a few minutes talking about proper cyberprotection. So, if you’re confident in your spam-fighting abilities, relax and enjoy a complimentary pumpkin muffin.* Otherwise, read on and reinforce your knowledge.

*Complimentary pumpkin muffins available only for PC World staff

Your Spam Protection Plan

Thinking about responding to an unsolicited message?

Maybe a pleasant request to be removed from the list? Don’t. End of story.

The same goes for “delivery failure” messages.

If you don’t remember sending the message being referenced, hit delete and move on.

Avoid giving out your primary e-mail address on any forum or blog site that you don’t absolutely trust.

Set up a secondary “junk” account for public distribution instead.

Similarly, don’t post your primary e-mail address on your own blog or Web site. Bots will find it and add you to their lists.

Never send money, either for a purchase or donation, to any entity you learned about through an unsolicited message.

This is old, but it still hasn’t hit home for some folks: DON’T CLICK ON LINKS IN UNSOLICITED E-MAILS.

If a message from your bank tells you to click to confirm your account, ignore it.

Open up your browser and type in the bank’s legit URL manually, then see if there’s any real issue to be addressed.

Dear Friend,

This mail might come to you as a surprise and the temptation to ignore it as incurious could come into your mind but please consider it a divine wish and accept it with a deep sense of humility.

I am Mr.Mahamadu Jubril the officer in charge of Auditing department of African Development Bank (ADB)Ouagadougou Burkina Faso in West Africa, withdue respect and Regard, I have decided to contact you on a business transaction that will be very beneficial to both of us at the end of the transaction.

During our investigation and auditing in this Bank, I came across a very huge sum of money belonging to one of our deceased customer who died on July 30th 2002 of a ghastly motor accident and the fund has been dormant in his account with this bank without any claim of the fund in our Custody either from his family or relation before my discovery to this development.

Although personally, I kept this information secret to enable the whole plans and idea be Profitable and successful during the time of execution, the said amount is Twelve million Two Hundred Thousand United States dollars(US$12.2m), as it may interest you to know.

I got your impressive information on my search for a reliable partner, I contacted you to be my partner and person to be reliable and capable to champion a business of such magnitude without any problem.

Meanwhile all the arrangement to put claim over this fund as the next of kin to the deceased, get the required approval and transfer this money to a foreign account has been put in Place and directives and needed information will be relayed to you as soon as you indicate your interest and willingness to assist me and also benefit your self to this great business opportunity.

In fact I could have done this deal alone but because of my position in this country as a civil servant and we are not allowed to operate a foreign account and would eventually raise eye brow on my side during the time of transfer because I work in this bank.

This is the actual reason why it will require a second party or fellow who will forward claims as the next of kin with affidavit of trust of oath to the bank and also present a foreign account where he will need the money to be re-transferred into on his request as it may be after due verification and clarification by the correspondent branch of the bank where the whole money will be remitted from to your own designation bank account.

I will not fail to inform you that this transaction is 100% risk free, on smooth conclusion of this transaction, you will be entitled to 40% of the total sum as gratification, while 10% will be set aside to take care of expenses that may arise during the time of transfer, while 50% will be for me, please you have been advised to keep “Top Secret” as I am still in service and intend to retire from service after I conclude this deal with you.

I will be monitoring the whole situation here in this bank until you confirm the money in your account, and I will come down to your country for subsequent sharing of the fund according to percentages previously indicated and further Investment.

Do contact me as soon as you receive this letter through my private email address : mahamadu10@hotmail.com

I suggest you get back to me As soon as possible and also include your personal phone/mobile and fax numbers for easy communication.

Yours faithfully,

Mr.Mahamadu Jubril.

Flurry of Spam Targeting the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

Consumers continue to be inundated by spam purportedly from the FBI.

As with previous spam attacks, the latest versions use the names of several high ranking executives within the FBI and even the IC3 to attempt to defraud consumers.

Many of the spam e-mails currently in circulation claim to be an “official order” from the FBI’s Anti-Terrorist and Monetary Crimes Division, from an alleged FBI unit in Nigeria, confirm an inheritance or contain a lottery notification, all informing recipients they have been named the beneficiary of millions of dollars.

To claim the large sum, recipients are instructed to furnish their personally identifiable information (PII) and are often threatened with some type of penalty, such as prosecution, if they fail to do so.

Specific PII information requested includes, but is not limited to, the recipient’s name, banking information, telephone number, and a copy of their passport.

The spam e-mail allegedly from the IC3 states that the recipient has extorted money and will be given a limited amount of time to refund the money or face prosecution.

Do not respond. These e-mails are a hoax.

The FBI does not send unsolicited e-mails of this nature. FBI Executives are briefed on numerous investigations but do not personally contact consumers regarding such matters.

In addition, the IC3 does not send threatening letters to consumers demanding payments for Internet crimes.

Consumers should not respond to any unsolicited e-mails or click on any embedded links associated with such e-mails, as they may contain viruses or malware.

It is imperative consumers guard their PII. Providing your PII will compromise your identity!

If you have been a victim of Internet crime, please file a complaint at http://www.ic3.gov/.

Dear Sir/Madam

FAMILY INVESTMENT FUND PROPOSAL

With due respect, trust and humility, I write you this proposal, which I believe, it would be of great interest to you. I found your contact while I was doing a private research on the business directories for a reliable and capable foreign partner who will assist us to invest our family inheritance investment fund into real estate/properties or a lucrative profitable business venture in his/her company or country.

I am Mrs. Mary Mojo the wife of (late) Mr. David Mojo of Zimbabwe .

During the current war against farmers in Zimbabwe and from the support of our President Robert Mugabe to claim all the white owned farms in our country, all the white farmers were ordered to surrender their farms to his party members and his followers.

My husband who was one of the best rich farmers in our country and the treasury of the farmer’s co-operation did not support our president idea, so the party members invaded my husband’s farms and burnt everything in the farm, killed my husband and made away with a lot of items in the farm.

After the death of my husband, my family and I decided to move out of because of our lives were in danger. Before the death of my husband, he deposits the sum of US$18.2M ( Dollars) in one of the private security company for safekeeping, as if he foresaw the looming danger in .

This money was deposited in a box as a family valuables/precious items to avoid much demurrage from Security Company and for the security of the fund.

This amount was meant for the purchase of new machines and chemicals for his farms and established of new farm in .

So if you consider this proposal, we have agreed to give you 25% of the Total sum for helping us to move this money out of South Africa and for your assistance in investing the fund in your country while 75% will be for me and my family to invest in your country.

All I want is for you to furnish me your details and your personal phone and fax numbers and your email address for easy communication.

Finally, as soon as you have indicated your interest and capability to handle this transaction then my son will details you the procedures

Please contact my son James Mojo on below telephone number and email address for further details:
